Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
