Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
